It was a day for all troops nearby, a day for fun and happiness and a day for enjoyment. 90th Bristol scouts were one of the many troops to take part and although not everyone could make it, those that came were excited. As many scouts set up temporary camp, they discovered not only were there lots of activities but Bear Grylls, Chief Scout himself, was also coming. Bear Grylls to scouts is like honey to a bee because of his excellent survival skills and love of the outdoors. Everyone was buzzing with energy.
Many of the older scouts and explorers were allowed to go down to the harbour side and do water sports. A short bus journey down and you could take part in sailing, kayaking, canoeing, pulling and rafting. Races, games and singing were some of the many things you could do, all provided by ‘Young Bristol’. Everyone was having fun. A boat came sailing by and decided to stop. No one noticed him at first but Bear Grylls stood up and started talking. It was amazing - Bear Grylls here in Bristol, on a boat.
Back at Ashton Court the rest of the scouts, beavers, cubs and explorers were getting stuck in to all the wonderful things to do. This included segways, simulators, giant hamster balls and even a marquee dedicated to Bristol Zoo. Every activity was free and there were many tents selling refreshments, badges, woggles and other things. The name of the event was ‘Bear Hunt’ because each Scout, Beaver and Cub was given a sheet with boxes and in those boxes were spaces for signatures. You had to find a number of dressed up bears and get their signatures’. There was also a space for a very special signature, Bear Grylls.
What a wonderful day for everyone to share and the amount of organising was deeply appreciated by everyone that turned up.
